Mesquite High School Alumnus Killed in Action
Hanby is a name that is synonymous with the community of Mesquite. Maj. John L. Hanby, or Johnny as he was affectionately known, was a standout athlete at Mesquite High School and was named the school’s Athlete of the Year as a senior while serving as captain of both the football and basketball teams. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army during World War II. Rising to the rank of major, Hanby served with the 2nd and 9th Infantry Divisions and took part in the historic D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Just two months later, he made the ultimate sacrifice, losing his life in combat in France.
Hanby’s legacy extends far beyond athletics. His courage, leadership, and selfless service to his country continue to stand as an enduring source of pride and inspiration for the Mesquite community.
