GREG LAUTENSLAGER

North Mesquite High School Cross Country/Track, Class of 1976

Greg Lautenslager holds a unique place in Mesquite ISD history as the district’s first-ever state champion. In 1976, the North Mesquite High School standout captured the Class 4A state title in the mile run, beginning a legacy of excellence that inspired generations of student-athletes. His school records in the mile and two-mile runs stood for 44 years, a testament to the remarkable standard he set. Lautenslager continued his success at the collegiate level, earning second-team NCAA All-American honors in both cross-country and track. He narrowly missed qualifying for the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team in the 5,000 meters by just seven seconds.

Beyond competition, he built a distinguished career as a sportswriter, including 10 years with The Dallas Morning News, where he authored the newspaper’s running column. His influence on the sport has extended through coaching and mentorship. Lautenslager has coached hundreds of athletes at the University of North Texas and with the National Academy of Distance Running in New Zealand. Many of his protégés, including his sons, have gone on to earn conference and national titles.
