DONNA CAPPS

North Mesquite High School Girls Basketball

Donna Capps built a legendary coaching career at both the high school and collegiate levels, earning recognition as one of the most successful girls basketball coaches in Texas history. Over her career, she compiled an outstanding 510-199 record (.731) at the high school level and surpassed 600 victories as a head coach across the prep and college ranks. Known for her coaching success, leadership, and trademark country wit, Capps earned Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year honors twice (1983 and 1988) and was named Dallas Times Herald Coach of the Year in 1988. That same year, she received High School Women’s Coach of the Year recognition from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, Texas Girls Coaches Association, and Baden Sports.

As head coach at the University of Texas at Arlington, she transformed a struggling program into an NCAA contender and was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year. Before her coaching career, Capps was a standout player at Crandall High School, where she earned four consecutive All-District selections and developed the scoring ability that would become a hallmark of her basketball legacy.
