The 2010 Poteet football team surprised everyone. The program had been suffering, winning only one game in the previous two years leading up to the 2010 season. Seeking a change, MISD hired Head Coach Randy Jackson to take over, who would go on to transform a winless Pirates squad into a perennial playoff team. Led by quarterback Beau Nowell and captain wide receiver Justin Velasquez, the Pirates got out to a hot start, defeating Red Oak in a thrilling overtime game that solidified the notion that the Pirates had arrived. But perhaps the most significant win of the season came in the playoffs against Texas powerhouse Highland Park. The teams met at Cowboys Stadium and played a close game until the 3rd quarter, when Poteet scored 21 points and ran away with the game, beating Highland Park for the first time in school history. The Pirates would go on to play the defending champions, Aledo, in the state semifinals after predictions declared they wouldn’t make it out of the first round. A hard-fought contest saw Poteet lose to Aledo by two, who went on to blow out their opponent in the state championship game. The 2010 squad revived the program and helped launch a decade of deep playoff runs.
