Steve Glenn
KEOM Sports Broadcast Team
Fans of Mesquite ISD Athletics will be familiar with the voice of Steve Glenn. The year 2021 will mark 50 years of service for Glenn in Mesquite ISD. Together with partner Ed Johnson, the pair has announced over 2,000 Mesquite ISD games on the KEOM airwaves. Glenn taught and coached at Agnew Middle School and Mesquite High School until 1984. He then served as an assistant principal at Poteet, principal at Wilkinson Middle School and as an administrative officer at the MISD Central Office, all while lending his voice to MISD. He produces a radio program, The Sports Page, which airs Monday through Friday on KEOM. This fall marks 36 years as a part of the KEOM broadcast team and Mesquite Athletics.
MAJ. John L. Hanby
Mesquite High School Alumnus
Killed in Action
Hanby is a name that is synonymous with the community of Mesquite. In his senior year, Johnny, as he was affectionately known, was named Mesquite High School’s Athlete of Year, captaining the football and basketball team. After graduating, he went on to join the U.S. Army and served our country during World War II. He achieved the rank of major, served in the 2nd and 9th Infantry Divisions and fought in the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. Just two months later, he gave his life for his country and was killed in action in France.
ED Johnson
KEOM Sports Broadcast Team
Another instantly recognizable voice for fans of Mesquite ISD Athletics belongs to Ed Johnson. Employed with Mesquite since the 1970s, Johnson has worn many hats in Mesquite ISD. From 1970-76, he served at North Mesquite as a math teacher, football assistant and head baseball coach. He briefly left Mesquite to be the head football coach at First Baptist Academy in Dallas, earning the Dallas Morning News Private School Coach of the Year during his tenure. He then returned to Mesquite in 1979 and has been a mainstay ever since. After teaching and coaching at Mesquite High as a football assistant until 1983, he served as a co-op teacher there until 1999. Together, Steve Glenn and Ed Johnson have broadcast over 2,000 MISD athletic events, and this fall marks 36 years of service with the KEOM team that provides coverage for Mesquite ISD.

Doug Robinson
Poteet High School Cross Country & Boys Track
Doug Robinson is no stranger to the Mesquite Hall of Honor. His state-winning cross-country teams were inducted in 2019. Coach Robinson was an important figure in Mesquite ISD athletics for many years. From 1974-2013, he coached at Mesquite High, West Mesquite and Poteet and was met with success every step of the way. The 1990s brought three UIL state championships in cross-country, and he holds the distinguished honor of bringing the first team UIL state championship to Mesquite ISD. The Poteet cross-country team was also team state runner-up in 2003, 2007 and 2008 and took third place in 1992, 2000 and 2006. The boys track team enjoyed success during his 24-year span as head coach as they took UIL state third place in 2004 and had several state champions.

Ben Robertson
North Mesquite High School Cross Country & Girls Track
Ben Robertson made his mark on Mesquite and left a legacy that will be remembered within the community for years to come. Coach Robertson, employed with Mesquite ISD from 1969-1996 at North Mesquite High School, was known for his passion for the sport and helping his athletes succeed to the best of their abilities. He led his cross-country teams to team UIL state runner-up in 1988 and 1989 and had an individual state champion in 1990. After retiring, Coach Robertson served as the Memorial Stadium manager and the cross-country and track coordinator for MISD until his death in 2017. His legacy is carried on through the Ben Robertson Cross-Country Stallion Stampede and the Ben Robertson Relays named in his honor.

Teresa Mcmillan
North Mesquite High School Girls Basketball (Class of 1988)
Teresa McMillan exemplified what it meant to be a student-athlete. Talented on the court, the 1985-86 Sophomore of the Year was also a standout in the classroom. McMillan was the president of the German Club, a member of the Drama Club and was a part of the 1988 Principal’s Council of Honor. Reaching First Team All-District her junior and senior years, she was highly recruited and ultimately decided to attend Texas Tech, where she made the All-Southwest Conference Team twice. Upon graduating, the three-time SWC Player of the Week played professionally for Brazilian team Lacta Santo Andre.
David winkler
North Mesquite High School Track & Football (Class of 1990)
David Winkler authored one of the most successful careers in the history of Texas track and field, dominating the category of shot put. To date, Winkler is one of only three athletes in history to win the event three times in the state’s largest classification. In addition, David was the United States Junior Champion and Pan-American gold medalist in the shot put in 1989. In 1990, David was voted All-American by Track and Field News and competed at the Junior World Championships in Bulgaria. In football, Dave was a first team all-district and all-area offensive linemen for the Stallions. Later in his career, David picked up three state titles in Olympic weightlifting in 1996 through 1998. Ranked second in the country in super heavyweight weightlifting in 1996, he went on to win a bronze medal in 1997 at the USA Weightlifting Championships in the category of clean and jerk.
Mike Ford
Mesquite High School Football (Class of 1977)
Football fans in Mesquite know Mike Ford. In 1974, the star quarterback led the Skeeters to an 11-3-1 record on the way to the school’s first district championship. Ford and the Skeeters became the second team in Mesquite ISD history to reach the playoffs, making it all the way to the 4A state championship before narrowly losing to Brazoswood. After high school, Ford enjoyed great success as quarterback of the SMU Mustangs, where he ranks third all time in pass attempts and completions, second all time in passing yards and sixth all time in passing touchdowns. He lit opposing defenses up as he led the nation in total offense and passing yards as a sophomore and was considered a Heisman Trophy candidate during his junior year. Ford went on to play two seasons in the NFL after being drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1981.
Heather Fortenberry Beaty
Poteet High School Softball (Class of 2006)
The list of accomplishments is long for Heather Fortenberry-Beaty. The 2003 District Newcomer of the Year led her team to Poteet’s first state finals as a freshman. Her sophomore and junior years saw her named as the back-to-back District Pitcher of the Year, and she capped off her high school career as the District MVP in 2006. Earning a scholarship to play at the next level, Fortenberry-Beaty competed for University of Texas at Arlington, where she continued her winning ways. The 2006 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year had a team best 2.33 ERA and went on to lead the team in several categories throughout her career. After graduating, Fortenberry-Beaty returned to Mesquite ISD and has served at North Mesquite and Poteet as a softball coach and special education teacher.

1991 West Mesquite High School baseball
State Finalist
The 1990-91 West Mesquite Wranglers baseball team was the first Mesquite ISD team to advance to the state tournament. The 4A district champions posted a 25-9 overall record while only losing one district game. Led by legendary Coach Tommy Sigler, MISD’s all-time leader in victories, the team refused to fall short of the state championship. After defeating the number two team in the state in the quarterfinals, the team rallied for a come-from-behind victory in the state semi-finals, beating number one ranked West Orange Stark. The Wranglers finally fell in the state championship game, losing by one run to Robstown High School.
1987-88 North mesquite high school girls basketball
State Finalist
The 1987-88 North Mesquite High School girls basketball team was a force in Texas. Led by Coach Donna Capps, a 2019 Hall of Honor inductee, the Lady Stallions were the undefeated district, bi-district, area and regional champions that year and finished with a 36-1 record as they lost to Duncanville in the state championship. Their success on the court was equally matched off the court as the entire team was on the honor roll and boasted both the homecoming queen and the student body president. All five starters and several others from the team earned college scholarships and went on to play at the next level.
